"I'm worried but

I don't know which

test I will need"

Our clinics are friendly and non-judgmental with quick turnaround of results for early peace of mind. Simply work out how long it has been since the risky exposure or incident and then follow the guide below to choose which scenario best fits your situation, then follow the advice:

If you have had sex with a commercial sex worker (eg escort, prostitiute)

Needless to say, sexual intercourse with a sex worker is one of the riskiest sexual activities one can engage in, mainly because of the large number of partners that each sex worker has.

Added to this, some sex workers are also intravenous drug users, which increases their chances of being infected with an STD, STI or HIV which is passed on by sharing blood - which can happen by sharing needles.

If you have had sex with a sex worker, especially if you did not use a condom, then you should arrange to have a

full STD screen.

If your incident was less than 28 days ago you can have the Early Detection Screen which can detect a wide range of infections from just 7-10 days post exposure.

If you have had a one night stand or random sexual encounter and want to make sure you have not picked anything up that could be transmitted to your partner

The most important issue here is that you should avoid having unprotected sex with anyone else until you get tested, and your results confirm that you did not contract an infection from that incident.

All tests have an incubation period, that is the time that needs to elapse before any infection will be detectable in the laboratory, however you can still transmit infections during this period.

In this situation, when you want results as quickly as possible we would recommend being tested for those infections with the shortest incubation period.  The most appropriate tests in these circumstances are:

A urine only STI screen upon symptom development or from 7 days after the exposure followed by a repeat test at 28 days after any incident for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes I and II (current infection), mycoplasma, ureaplasma, trichomonas and gardnerella - results in 2-33 days from when the sample is received in the laboratory.

The Early Detection Screen (at 7-10 days after any incident) for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C - results in 4-5 days from when the sample is received in the laboratory.
